Hello Cocktail Clan. While in Covington, KY went over to Rich’s Proper Food and Drink which is part of the B-Line. Rich’s is in downtown Covington across from the Hotel Covington. Sits on the corner of Madison Ave. and 7th St. which is a one-way street. Gathering check-ins at the various places and stopped for an appetizer and a cocktail. The cocktail menu is nice with a good variety and their plays on certain cocktails. The food menu is one page with appetizers and larger bites. Visiting another bar I was informed that the best oysters in town were here, and the specials are good.

Looking over the food and cocktail menu, we decided to go with a Black Manhattan and a dozen oysters. Presentation of the oysters was as expected. Half shell with horse radish, cocktail sauce, and lemons. Forgot to ask what kind of oysters they were. It tasted really good but they gave way to much horseradish sauce.
Now for the Black Manhattan. This is a twist on a classic. The twist is in the vermouth (or lack of) they use.
Cocktail Ingredients:
- Rich’s Private Barrel Rittenhouse Rye
- Foro Amaro
- Angostura Bitters
The Garnish as a lemon peel with a cherry in the middle. They didn’t drop a cherry in the bottom of the coup glass as many Manhattans get.
The drink was very rye forwarded and tasted extremely good. I will be making one of these when I can get a bottle of Foro Amaro.

Overall, a great experience at Rich’s but not exactly what I was expecting. The place was a bit larger and more open than I pictured. When we were there the bartender was also serving as the waiter for the couple of tables in the dining room. When I was informed of the restaurant / bar I pictured in my head a small intimate place. Will go back next time in Covington for a full meal.
