Hello Cocktail Clan. Today we are going to talk about Sassafras Old Fashioned. Another great, three ingredient cocktail that is easy to make. Who doesn’t like root beer!! This cocktail with the sassafras and a dark rye and just enough simple syrup ends up tasting like a root beer soda. Ingredients
Sassafras Syrup
This is a syrup made from the sassafras tree bark. You take the bark mix it with coriander, star anis, cloves, molasses and granulated sugar. Here is a link if you want to make this yourself. I have not done that and prefer to buy my syrup. Here is where I get the Hoosier Sugar Daddy syrup out of Indiana. I am not affiliated with them I just like what they do.
Dark Rye / Double Rye Whiskey
Here you should use a decent rye that you really enjoy. I prefer 100 proof rye. This to me brings the Rye flavor to match the root beer flavor. Here is where you want to balance the flavors you are looking for.
Angostura Bitters
Go to the well for bitters on this one. Using Angostura Bitters helps bring out a bit of the spice in the cocktail through the root beer flavor. I use 5 dashes but, change it up for your preference.
Ingredients
- 2 oz Rye
- 1 oz Sassafras Syrup
- 5 Dashes of Angostura
Instructions
For this you will place ice in a mixing glass then add the Rey, Sassafras and Bitters. Stir until well chilled, for about 20 seconds.
You will then take the mixture and strain into a rocks glass with a large sphere of ice and enjoy.
I do not garnish this cocktail but, if you would like you can use a lemon peel.
Conclusion
Hope you enjoy this root beer old-fashioned. This is an alcoholic root beer soda and brings back the days of going to an A&W Drive in. I have also heard of this cocktail using orange bitters and garnishing with a lemon twist. I will give that a try. These three ingredient cocktails are fun and easy to make. For this one you could just make it in the rocks glass and skip the mixing glass. Hope you enjoy.
